Zama and Fujita (1977) listed C. aurantius (sic) (Valenciennes), and cited one 316-mm SL specimen (TUFO 1238). We were unable to find this specimen at the Tokyo University of Fisheries. The largest of 31 specimens of C. aurantia examined by Randall and Heemstra (1991) measures 225 mm SL. We therefore suspect that the specimen examined by Zama and Fujita was C. sonnerati. Kurata et al., 1971 and Kishimoto, 1972 also recorded C. aurantia from the Ogasawara Islands; however without specimens, can cannot be certain whether these records were based on material of C. aurantia, C. sonnerati, or C. spiloparaea (Valenciennes) (the latter species has been misidentified by other Japanese authors as C. aurantia). The record of C. obtusaurus (sic) Evermann and Seale, a junior synonym of C. aurantia, from the Ogasawara Islands needs confirmation. Our Figure 23 provides a positive record of C. sonnerati for the Ogasawara Islands. Kenji Kato Specimen #33 (Ref. 26066). Also Ref. 33390.
